Acupuncture is the oldest, most continuously utilized system of medicine in the world and combined with herbal medicine, is used by 2/3 of the world’s population as its primary source of health care. Its roots and foundation can be traced back 5000 years when the first written accounts of it can be found, but it is believed to predate that by several thousand years. It has been refined and expanded upon throughout the centuries, but the basic theory of the medicine and the view of the body and its functions hold true in this modern day world. Acupuncture is just one tool that falls under the umbrella of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It is the most recognized and is often combined with other modalities of TCM such as herbal medicine, moxibustion (topical warming therapy), gwa-sha, tui-na, cupping, exercises such as tai chi or qigong and dietary therapy, all of which can be utilized to enhance any treatment.
